Database

Motivation and challenges

Because of their properties, such as the ion exchange capacity and their selective antibacterial and fungicidal effect, mosses open up promising applications. Approximately 15,000 species of moss with a wide variety of locations and growing conditions are known. In order to be able to select a suitable moss species in a specific environment, a system that can provide a systematic breakdown according to cultivation conditions and the growth requirements of various species of moss is currently lacking.

Project insight and perspectives

The newly created database represents the central instrument for information collected during the project. Over 500 mosses collected to date provide facts regarding their respective location requirements and are supplemented using images of their appearance and structure. Using their filter function, the data can be clustered to evaluate the requirements of specific moss species and to create data charts.
